About the Role
As an irs appeals officer (team case lead), you will hold conferences and negotiate issues directly with taxpayers and their representatives β often officers of publicly traded companies and attorneys from the most prestigious national law and accounting firms β to resolve tax disputes fairly and impartially. You will be assigned to Area 9, a national program made up of four teams responsible for the largest cases in Appeals: Large Corporate Compliance Program Cases and Industry Cases involving multiple complex tax issues and over $10 million dollars in dispute.
This work is accomplished alongside a team of grade-14 Technical Specialists, International Specialists, and Appeals Officers who are experts in their respective corners of federal taxation. You will lead several teams simultaneously, coaching individual employees toward effective problem-solving and providing substantive, ongoing feedback on team assignments β both written and oral β that follows guidelines set by the Chief of Appeals and Area Director.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Hold conferences and negotiate tax dispute resolutions directly with taxpayers and their representatives
- Lead multiple teams of Appeals Officers, Technical Specialists, and International Specialists
- Coach individual employees toward effective team objectives and problem-solving
- Provide written and oral feedback on team assignments, following Chief Appeals and Area Director guidelines
- Resolve Large Corporate Compliance Program (LCC) and Industry Case (IC) disputes exceeding $10 million
- Apply extensive accounting and legal principles to corporate and complex tax disputes
- Interpret tax law, regulations, court decisions, and congressional intent on novel issues
- Communicate and foster dialogue with peers, customers, and business partners across Appeals
- Maintain command of Internal Revenue Manual (IRM) policies and Appeals procedures
- Resolve disputes involving mergers, acquisitions, consolidations, transfer pricing, and foreign transactions
