About the Role
As a DEA Special Agent, your mission is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States — bringing to justice those who grow, manufacture, or distribute controlled substances in or destined for the US. You will conduct complex, long-term investigations of major drug trafficking organizations using wiretaps, confidential sources, undercover operations, surveillance, and coordination with foreign law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
DEA Special Agents work across all 50 states and in over 80 countries through a network of 92 domestic offices and international country offices. The rise of fentanyl trafficking, cartel operations, and narco-terrorism has made DEA one of the most urgently funded agencies in the federal government — with significant hiring momentum expected through 2026 and 2027.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct complex criminal investigations of major drug trafficking organizations, cartels, and narco-terrorist networks
- Plan and execute undercover operations, surveillance operations, and wiretap investigations
- Develop and manage confidential human sources (informants) within drug trafficking organizations
- Execute search warrants, arrest warrants, and participate in seizure operations
- Seize and document narcotics, weapons, currency, vehicles, and other assets subject to forfeiture
- Coordinate with the DEA Special Operations Division (SOD), US Marshals, FBI, CBP, and international law enforcement
- Conduct financial investigations — follow the money to trace drug proceeds and money laundering
- Prepare and execute court-authorized wire intercepts (Title III wiretaps)
- Testify before federal grand juries and in federal district court
- Conduct foreign investigations and operations through DEA Country Offices abroad
