About the Role
As a Border Patrol Agent, you will patrol the United States border between official ports of entry — detecting, deterring, and apprehending individuals who are attempting to enter the country illegally, and seizing narcotics, weapons, and contraband. Unlike CBP Officers who work at designated ports of entry (airports, land crossings), Border Patrol Agents operate in often remote and rugged terrain — using vehicles, ATVs, horses, helicopters, and foot patrols to maintain border security around the clock.
You will work within one of 20 Border Patrol Sectors across the southern and northern borders. Technology plays a major role in modern border patrol — agents use remote video surveillance systems, ground sensors, night vision equipment, forward-looking infrared (FLIR) cameras, and UAV/drone assets to detect and track illegal crossings.
“Border Patrol Agents are among the most capable and dedicated law enforcement officers in the federal government. Their work is vital to protecting our communities and our nation.” — CBP Leadership
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Patrol US borders between ports of entry to detect and prevent illegal entry of persons and contraband
- Apprehend individuals attempting to cross the border illegally and process them according to CBP procedures
- Detect, interdict, and seize narcotics, weapons, currency, and other contraband
- Operate surveillance systems including remote video, ground sensors, night vision, and FLIR equipment
- Conduct vehicle stops, field interviews, and roving patrols in assigned sector
- Respond to sensor activations and pursue suspects through challenging terrain on foot, vehicle, ATV, or horseback
- Maintain accurate records, write detailed incident and arrest reports
- Coordinate with other CBP units, local law enforcement, DEA, FBI, and federal prosecutors on enforcement actions
- Provide emergency medical assistance as a trained CBP Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Testify in federal immigration and criminal court proceedings as required
