About the Role
USPS Automotive Technicians work at Vehicle Maintenance Facilities (VMFs) — dedicated repair shops attached to or near major postal installations. Your daily work involves diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and electronic problems across a diverse fleet of vehicles using computerized diagnostic tools. You will perform everything from routine preventive maintenance (oil changes, brake jobs, tire rotations) to complex engine overhauls, transmission repairs, and electronic control system diagnostics.
USPS is currently executing the largest fleet modernization in its history — replacing aging LLVs with thousands of new electric NGDVs. This transition means Automotive Technicians will increasingly work with advanced electric vehicle systems, high-voltage batteries, and regenerative braking technology, making USPS VMFs exciting places to grow modern automotive skills.
“Working at a USPS VMF gave me the stability and benefits I could not find at a private shop, plus I work on a wider variety of vehicles than anywhere else.” — USPS Automotive Technician, Texas
